Mapensela, but not behind the microphone
You know Reggie “Mapensela” Ndlovu's voice. His isiZulu football commentary is full of character, and he has a way of making even a routine passage of play sound like something worth paying attention to.
At the 2025 El Kasico Easter Games curtain raiser, we got a different version of Mapensela.
No microphone. Football boots instead.
Reggie was out on the pitch showing off his touch, and one particular skill had a familiar kasi-football flavour. If you know Tshepo “Skhwama” Matete's style, you'll understand the comparison.
It's a short video, but that's part of the fun. The man who usually describes the action is suddenly the one giving us something to talk about.

He wanted to be a footballer first
Here's the bit that makes this more than a celebrity football clip: Mapensela once dreamed of playing professionally.
In a 2018 interview with Durban University of Technology, he spoke about how seriously he had taken football before his career moved toward drama, television and commentary. He played for Stratford Residence and picked up goal-of-the-season and midfielder-of-the-season awards in 2010.
Those aren't stories we've made up after seeing the El Kasico clip. They're part of his own account of how football shaped his life.
He studied drama and production, worked in television, and eventually found his way into sports commentary. The path changed, but football never really left the picture.

A different kind of football talent
Mapensela began his commentary career at SABC Sport in 2015 and went on to become a familiar SuperSport voice. His delivery isn't shy. He brings expression, rhythm and humour into matches, particularly through isiZulu.
That approach has earned recognition. In 2022, he received the Hollard Sport Industry Indigenous Commentator Award.
There's something fitting about it: a man who dreamed of making a career with his feet ended up making his name by telling South Africans what the players were doing with theirs.
And, judging by the El Kasico footage, he still enjoys a little chance to show what he can do.

A touch of Skhwama
The title of our original clip says it all: Mapensela channeling his inner Skhwama.
It isn't a claim that Reggie copied a specific move or that Skhwama took part in the match. It's a nod to that unmistakable kasi-football spirit — the showmanship, the confidence and the idea that football should sometimes make the crowd smile.
We know Mapensela as the voice of other people's highlights. For a few seconds at El Kasico, he made one of his own.
